Read faint copies
Increase useful separation in pale photocopied text.
Separate faint lettering from its background with manual contrast, auto levels or local contrast. Compare the scan before processing and choose settings that retain small marks as well as bold text.
Live preview of this page. Strong adjustments can hide faint detail or emphasize noise. Choose 150, 200 (default), or 300 DPI for export.
Your result is ready. Download a copy, or return to adjust the settings.
Open Contrast PDF and upload the document. Find a page containing both ordinary text and a faint detail, such as a small date or handwritten addition.
Start with Manual contrast for a straightforward change to contrast and brightness. Move the controls gradually and use the original view for comparison.
Choose Start, download the result and compare it with the original. Use punctuation and pale handwriting as the detail test.

Adjust weak pages without forcing one treatment onto every scan.
Compare local contrast carefully on aged or textured paper.
Adjust contrast and brightness together while watching small text.
Manual contrast is useful when the page is generally even but the lettering looks weak. Increase contrast gradually; use brightness to keep the paper from becoming too gray or the letters from fading.
The starting settings are not a verdict about your document. Compare a thin punctuation mark or pale handwritten note before applying a stronger adjustment.
Adjust the overall tonal range with strength and clipping controls.
Auto levels changes the relationship between the light and dark values in the page. Strength controls the amount; clipping affects how much of the extremes is discarded.
A clean background is not the only goal. If a pale signature or a highlight disappears, reduce the effect or return to Manual contrast.
Bring out local differences when one global change is insufficient.
Local contrast has its own amount and detail controls. It can make nearby light and dark features easier to distinguish in a scan with uneven tones.
It can also emphasize paper texture, noise and halos. Inspect the small print and any photograph rather than judging the result only from a zoomed-out page.
Apply one setting across similar scans or adjust difficult pages separately.
Keep shared settings only when the source pages need the same treatment. A dark photocopy and a pale original may need different adjustments.
The final PDF contains rendered page images at the chosen 150, 200 or 300 DPI. Run PDF OCR afterward when you need recognized text; existing searchable text is not retained by this conversion.
Open one PDF up to 50 MB and 200 source pages. The full source must meet these limits even when you export a subset. Large or complex files can reach browser-memory or processing limits earlier.
The PDF preview is displayed in your browser. Starting the operation sends the document and selected settings to the server for processing. File handling is described in the Privacy Policy.
A few answers before you get started.
Server processingTry Manual contrast for an evenly lit scan. Auto levels adjusts the overall tonal range; Local contrast changes nearby differences. Compare a small text detail before choosing.
Yes. Excessive contrast can remove faint strokes, merge letters or emphasize noise. Use a conservative setting and review the actual recognized result.
The adjusted PDF contains rendered page images. Existing searchable text is not retained; use PDF OCR afterward when needed.
The editor supports shared and individual page settings. Confirm the current scope before moving a control, then inspect other pages before export.
